When Nelkas Kwemo isn’t running off to football practice or engineering classes, he is meeting Miki and I on Earl Street right outside the ARC gym. Generously offering to drive us to Richardson, he informs us that he just woke up and our interview will be the first thing he is going to do after a long night of working at Ale. Humble and calm, we make small talk in the car in which we learn that Nelkas, born and raised in Montreal, is in his fourth year and serves as one of the defensive captains for the Queen’s Gaels Football team, his position - linebacker.
But football doesn’t define Nelkas. During our car ride, we learned about Nelkas’s love for filming and production. In fact, it’s his interest for creating short films himself that made it an easy decision for him to participate in this interview.
While prepping for our interview with Nelkas, we asked people in the Queen’s community for questions they would want to ask him. As a busy athlete and hard working engineer, majority of the people repeatedly wondered how he time manages so well. Below is an outline of Nelkas’s typical day:
6 AM - Workout followed by breakfast at 7:30 AM 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM - Lab at the Coastal Lab on West campus 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM - Group meetings for another one of his class's lab reports due this Friday 12:30 - 2:30 PM - Class 3:30 PM - Football meetings to watch practice from the day before to make corrections in preparation for the weekend game 5:00 PM - Get dressed for football practice 5:20 PM - Practice begins and goes until 7:30 PM 8:00 PM - Head to Leonard Dining Hall for a quick dinner at the cafeteria 9:00 PM - Library for however long it takes to finish schoolwork
So the real question is… how does he manage his time?!
“I manage my time by sacrificing day to day pleasures like sleep or "hang out" time. Especially during the football season. Aside from Saturday nights after games, I don't really get that much more time to just chill”
And after all the practices, classes, and never-ending schedule, where does Nelkas see himself in 5 years?
“Somewhere downtown Toronto settled in a comfortable condo working as a sales engineering account manager”
Good luck Nelkas - keep doing great things!
